Peking University was founded in 1898 and was first known as the Capital University College. It is China’s first national comprehensive university and was the highest education administrative agency in China at that time. After the Revolution of 1911, it was changed to its current name in 1912.As the center of the New Culture Movement and the origin of the May 4th Movement, as the earliest place for disseminating the Marxist and democratic scientific ideas in China, as the first base for the Chinese Communist Party, Peking University is the revitalization and liberation of the nation, and the construction and development of the country. Soon, the temporary university moved to Kunming, renamed the National Southwest Associated University. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Peking University resumed its studies in Peking in October 1946.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, colleges and universities throughout the country adjusted in 1952. On April 3, 2000, Peking University merged with former Beijing Medical University to form a new Peking University. In the 1930s and 1940s, the school was once known as Peking University Medical College and was incorporated into Peking University in July 1946. In 1952, in the adjustment of colleges and universities across the country, Peking University Medical College was detached from Peking University and was independently of Beijing Medical College. In 1985, it was renamed Beijing Medical University. In 1996, it became the first medical university supported by the “211 Project”. The merging of the two universities has further broadened the discipline structure of Peking University and laid the foundation for promoting the integration of medicine with the humanities, social sciences and sciences and reforming medical education.
